Our coffee chaff solution.

At Bruno Rossi we have a large amount of chaff, a by-product of our quality coffee roasting process.  Chaff is the outer layer or skin of the coffee bean; it falls off during the roasting process and is light and fluffy.  Post roasting, the chaff is collected and processed through a chaff compactor, which essentially compacts the light & fully coffee skin into ‘pucks’, so it is easier to manage and transport.

Our innovations manager heard about an amazing company, Ecostock that could help us with our chaff problem.  EcoStock are now collecting all the chaff pucks from our roastery and will use the chaff as one of the ingredients, along with other food waste, to create high value stock feed for dairy farmers. This new partnership with EcoStock ensures our coffee chaff is repurposed and no longer ends up in landfill!

EcoStock is a 100% New Zealand-owned business, that has been operating for 15 years, they collect food waste from over 140 clients and process over 30,000 tonnes a year of food waste.  EcoStock also founded EcoGas (15% EcoStock + 85% Pioneer Energy) Food-2-Fuel, which is NZ 1st Anaerobic Digestion Plant and can take organics not suitable for stock feed and provide, over time, an alternative & renewable source of gas to natural gas.  If you’d like to know more about EcoStock or EcoGas visit ecostock.co.nz.
